What is L-tyrosine?

L-tyrosine is one of the 12 nonessential amino acids.

L-tyrosine is a conditionally essential amino acid because, under normal conditions, the body synthesizes sufficient amounts of it from phenylalanine. Tyrosine is built into proteins and is a precursor for the synthesis of thyroxine, melanin and the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine.

Food Sources of Tyrosine

Cheese, cottage cheese and milk are good sources of tyrosine. Other dietary sources of tyrosine are protein-rich products such as eggs, beef and pork, poultry, fish, seafood.

Tyrosine is also common in protein-rich plant foods such as wheat germ, oat flakes, almonds, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, lima beans, avocados, chickpeas, lentils, soybeans and sunflower seeds.
