Key Takeaways

Turmeric powder

What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a bright yellow spice that comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. This plant belongs to the ginger family and grows mainly in India and Southeast Asia. People dry and grind the root into a fine powder.

The spice gets its golden color from curcumin, its main active compound. Turmeric has been a key ingredient in curry powder for thousands of years. It gives curry its yellow color and adds a warm, slightly bitter taste to food.

In cooking, turmeric serves as both a spice and a natural food coloring. Many cultures use it to color rice, soups, and sauces. The spice has an earthy aroma with hints of orange and ginger.

Fresh turmeric root looks similar to ginger root but has bright orange flesh inside. You can use it fresh, dried, or as a powder. The powder form is most common in kitchens around the world.

Is turmeric with black pepper the best?

Short answer: Based on human research, turmeric with black pepper is not clearly the best option. It is one useful way to increase curcumin absorption, but the evidence does not show that it is superior to other modern curcumin formulas in a consistent way.

What early human research suggested

An early human study in the late 1990s combined curcumin with piperine, the active compound in black pepper. The study reported a very large increase in measured blood levels of curcumin when people took the same dose of curcumin with piperine. This result led to the popular claim that black pepper makes curcumin “2000% more bioavailable”.

However, that study mainly looked at a single blood sample at one time point. It did not test long term health outcomes or compare this combination directly with newer curcumin formulations in large clinical trials.

What more recent human studies show

Later human trials looked at curcumin with piperine for multiple health outcomes. Some studies report small improvements when people take curcumin with piperine. Other studies show little or no extra effect, or they do not find clear differences compared with curcumin taken without piperine.

In addition, several modern curcumin products use other delivery systems, such as phytosomes, micelles or other fat based carriers. Head to head comparisons in humans are limited, but many of these newer systems increase blood levels of curcumin strongly, often much more than curcumin with black pepper.

What is Curcumin

Curcumin is the active ingredient in Turmeric. It is a herb or spice that comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. This plant has strong similarities to the ginger plant. It thrives best in subtropical and humid climates and is mainly grown in southwest India.

Curcuma has many names. In Dutch it is usually called Geelwortel or Kurkuma and formerly called Koenier. Turmeric is the English name and in India it is called Koenjit.

The spice has extensive and widespread use as a strong aromatic spice in cooking. It is an ingredient of curry powder (curry) and gives it its specific yellow color. It is also used as a dye to give other food products a yellow color.

Curcuma powder

In addition, it has been used for centuries in traditional Asian medicine. That use has spread throughout the rest of the world and today Curcuma is probably the most widely used herb for health applications. There is also widespread research on its effects on our health.

The active substances in Curcuma are the so-called curcuminoids. The most important of these is curcumin. The others are demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. A curcuma extract consists of at least 80% curcumin.

Curcuma is good for*:

* EC approval health claim(s) pending.

What is the best way to take it?

Curcuma is best taken with a high-fat meal to improve absorption. It does not matter what time of day.

How long should I use it?

You can use it completely safely for long periods of time. It is best to use Curcuma for at least several months consecutively for maximum results. High doses can also be used as a cure.

Does curcuma have side effects?

No. There are no side effects associated with using Curcuma and it can be used safely by almost anyone. However, people with gallbladder problems should avoid using it.

Are there any drug interactions?

In 2009, the European Medicines Agency published a monograph (detailed study) on turmeric. This monograph does not contain drug interactions. However, this does not mean that interactions are not possible. Therefore, always consult your treating physician first.
