What is lion's mane?
Lion's mane, known in Dutch as pruikzwam, is a common mushroom used in supplements. People in traditional Chinese medicine have used it for many centuries.
Hericium erinaceus
The fruiting body of the lion's mane mushroom has a striking shape. This appearance explains its different names: pruikzwam in Dutch, pom pom blanc in French, and Hericium erinaceus in Latin.
The mushroom stands out visually and contains one of the highest levels of active compounds among edible mushrooms.
People in China and Japan have used lion's mane for a long time. The mushroom is rare in the Netherlands, and picking it in the wild is forbidden.
Lion's mane: capsules, powder, drops
Lion's mane is available as a single extract in powder and capsule form, and as an ingredient in special mushroom blends.
These blends are usually available as powder, but there are also liquid products (tinctures) that you can dose with drops.

Experiences with lion's mane
Lion's mane is currently our best-selling single mushroom supplement, and customers report positive experiences with its use.
NGF
Research is underway on how lion's mane extract affects NGF (nerve growth factor) and BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor).
NGF is a neurotrophin that helps cells function well. It also supports the formation of myelin around nerve cells in the brain.
Nerve growth factor cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. Increasing NGF directly has no effect. The active compounds in lion's mane can influence the body's natural NGF production.

Effects
The effects of lion's mane come from the specific active compounds that this mushroom contains.
Beta-glucans
Lion's mane contains HEP3 beta-glucans, one of the most interesting forms of beta-glucans. These are polysaccharides, or complex fibers, with several health effects, and they occur in high amounts in mushrooms.
Lion's mane is also rich in phytosterols, essential minerals, and trace elements such as zinc, iron, and selenium. It also contains niacin, biotin, vitamin D, and a range of amino acids.
Adaptogen
Lion's mane is often grouped with adaptogenic mushrooms. Adaptogens are usually herbs or mushrooms that help the body's physical and mental stress response return to balance. They have a regulating effect.
Side effects
Lion's Mane capsules are safe to use as a dietary supplement. High doses may cause discomfort in people with sensitive digestion. Follow the dosage as stated on the label.
Lion's Mane supplements are suitable for long-term use, but take a break of a few weeks from time to time.
People who use medication should always consult their doctor before taking supplements.
