What are algae?

Algae are unicellular, plant-like organisms found in rivers and oceans, in both fresh and salt water. Algae that grow larger and consist of multiple cells are called seaweeds. Biologists also refer to algae as phytoplankton. In nature, there are many types of algae, and they form the basis of most food chains. Only a few tens of thousands of the total 200,000 to 800,000 different species have been described by science.

Algae produce omega-3 fatty acids

Algae produce omega-3 fatty acids themselves and pass them on in nature to the “fatty” fish such as herring and sardines that feed on these algae. That is why algae oil has the power of fish oil.

Most algae oil supplements mainly contain the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, but there are also increasingly more products that include EPA.

DHA is an important building block of the brain. 60% of the brain consists of fat, of which 20% is the omega-3 fatty acid DHA.

What is algae oil good for?

The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in algae oil contribute to normal heart function and are good for blood pressure. DHA is good for vision and supports brain function.

DHA is an important building block of the brain. Over 60% of the brain is made up of fat, about half of which is the omega-3 fatty acid DHA. The fats act as a kind of building block for the brain.

Why choose algae oil?

Sustainability

Oil from algae is more sustainable than oil obtained from fish. In addition, producing algae oil requires almost no land, fresh water, or fossil fuels. The algae are cultivated using sunlight, and they absorb CO2 and convert it into valuable nutrients. Algae are therefore often referred to as the “Green Gold of the Future.”

Algae farming

Guaranteed free from contaminants

Algae contain fewer contaminants than fish because they are low in the food chain. Thanks to the controlled production process, algae oil is guaranteed to be free of dioxins, PCBs, heavy metals, and other toxins.

Fatty acids in the form of phospholipids

Algae contain EPA and DHA in the form of phospholipids, unlike the triglycerides in fish oil. These may be more bioavailable because the body can incorporate these fatty acids directly into cell membranes. Triglycerides from fish oil must first be converted into phospholipids by the body.

More than just omega-3 fatty acids

Algae provide not only omega-3 fatty acids but also antioxidants (such as astaxanthin), probiotics, phytosterols, and vitamins.

Algae farming

World-wide interest in algae is high: algae can be farmed well and using algae as a food source is much more sustainable than catching or farming fish. Also in the Netherlands there is a lot of research on algae cultivation and several companies are already active.

There are different production systems for growing algae. For example, there are open and closed cultivation systems. So either in open ponds or in closed tubes (bioreactors).

Algae farming

When the first algae were grown on land they contained only DHA. The algae have now been "trained" to the point where they can also make EPA.
