Green tea extract

Green tea is one of the oldest beverages in the world, with a history of more than 5000 years. It is consumed widely in China and Japan, and its use has also grown in the West.

This long history is linked in part to its health benefits. Green tea is made from the leaves of the tea plant Camellia sinensis, which grows mainly in Southeast Asia.

It is an unfermented tea. The leaves are treated with steam, which helps protect important compounds such as polyphenols and catechins from oxidation.

Black tea is exposed to fermentation, which greatly reduces its catechin content. Research shows that catechins are responsible for tea's beneficial effects on health.

Standardized catechins

The most important catechin in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG.

This product is standardized to 120 mg catechins and 75 mg EGCG per capsule.

Thanks to its unique production process, these catechins are also absorbed twice as well as those from standard green tea.

Health effects

Catechins from green tea, especially EGCG, are powerful antioxidants. They help protect cells and tissues against free radicals, oxidative damage, and general signs of aging.

They also support the condition of the blood vessels and the heart. In particular, they help protect blood lipids against oxidation.

Green tea is also known for its role in weight management. Research shows that catechins support fat metabolism.

For this reason, green tea extract can be useful during weight loss, as an addition to changes in diet and lifestyle. It also supports the maintenance of normal cholesterol levels.

Phytosome® technology

Groene Thee-PS from Vitals has improved absorption through the patented Phytosome® technology of the Italian producer Indena.

The term Phytosome comes from the Greek words phuton, meaning plant, and soma, meaning body.

During the patented production process, the natural clumping of specific phytonutrients with low absorption, such as green tea polyphenols, is reduced. These compounds are then mixed with phospholipids from sunflower lecithin, in this case phosphatidylcholine.

The active compounds are not enclosed, as happens in liposomes. Instead, a homogeneous mixture of small particles is formed that can be absorbed well.

How absorption works

Polyphenols, including green tea catechins, have a natural affinity for phospholipids. This leads to the formation of phytosomes, in which the polyphenols bind to the phospholipids.

This improves absorption. Cell membranes, including those of cells in the small intestine, also consist of a phospholipid bilayer.

As a result, these phytosomes can pass through the intestinal wall effectively and the active compounds can be absorbed well into the circulation.

Studies show that this Phytosome® technology more than doubles the absorption of green tea catechins.

Compared with liposomes

In a liposome, the active substance is located in the center of a sphere with a double phospholipid layer.

Phytosome® technology works differently. It creates a homogeneous mixture and does not enclose the active substance.

As a result, much less phospholipid is needed than with liposomes.

About Indena

Indena is an Italian producer with locations around the world. The company specializes in phytonutrients.

Through research and technological development, it produces high-quality ingredients with strong substantiation and excellent absorption.
