Curcumine-SLCP™ as a technological breakthrough
Curcumin products face one main challenge: effective absorption and bioavailability. In its unprocessed form, curcumin quickly changes in the intestine and liver into inactive metabolites, such as curcumin glucuronide. The body then rapidly excretes these compounds.
After years of research with the University of California, Los Angeles, Verdure Sciences developed a solution for this problem. Verdure Sciences produces Curcumine-SLCP™ for Vitals.
Its patented technology increased curcumin absorption by 65 times and bioavailability by 285 times compared with standard curcumin products that contain 95% curcumin.
This result came from testing many formulations in humans. The best results came from a formula inspired by Indian cuisine, where turmeric is mixed with oily ingredients when curry pastes are prepared.
How the formula works
In the product sold under the brand name Longvida®, curcumin is enclosed in Solid Lipid Curcumin Particles. The curcumin sits inside a fatty particle made from three long-chain fats that also occur in food.
These fats are phosphatidylcholine, stearic acid, and ascorbyl palmitate.
Normally, curcumin is absorbed in the same way as many other nutrients, such as sugars and amino acids. In the intestinal epithelium, enzymes already convert part of the active curcumin into curcumin glucuronide, which is inactive.
Next, curcumin moves through the portal vein to the liver. There it becomes further inactivated and is then excreted quite quickly.
Alternative uptake route
Curcumine-SLCP™ follows a different route in the body. Because of its unique fat coating, the body recognizes it as a long-chain fat and handles it in the same way as similar fats from food.
In the intestinal cells, these fats enter chylomicrons, which are transport particles. The lymphatic system then carries them into the bloodstream.
These chylomicrons do not first pass through the liver. Instead, the blood transports them to tissues and organs, where a fat-splitting enzyme called lipoprotein lipase releases their contents.
The curcumin in the chylomicron remains in its biologically active form, also called free curcumin. In this form, it leaves the chylomicron and enters tissues and organs, where it can act.
Support in the body
Biologically active free curcumin is itself a fat-like substance. Because of this, it can even cross the blood-brain barrier, unlike inactive curcumin metabolites.
In this way, it can support the function of the central nervous system.
There are many curcumin products on the market today. To compare them well, it is important to look at several points.
Standard curcumin products often contain a very high amount of curcumin per daily dose. The goal is to let at least a small part escape inactivation in the intestine and liver.
Comparison with standard curcumin
Figure 1 shows that this approach has limited effect. Researchers compared blood levels of biologically active curcumin after a single dose of 650 mg of a standard curcumin product with blood levels after 650 mg of Longvida®, or Curcumine-SLCP™, which contains 130 mg curcumin.
Curcumine-SLCP™ produced a much higher peak plasma level of active curcumin. The standard curcumin product produced hardly any detectable active curcumin, despite its much higher dose.
A comparative study showed that Curcumine-SLCP™ is at least 65 times better absorbed than standard curcumin products. Its bioavailability was even 285 times higher.
Verdure Sciences also focuses strongly on the scientific basis for the health effects of its product. For this, the company works with leading independent scientists.
Why this form was chosen
Vitals chose Curcumine-SLCP™ because of its exceptionally high bioavailability and because human studies have been and are being carried out with this product.
When interpreting test results and comparing products, caution is important. Some other curcumin products also claim improved absorption.
It is important to check whether these claims are supported by measurements in humans. It also matters whether the measurements concern active curcumin itself or one of its inactive metabolites, such as curcumin glucuronide.
Another key point is the analytical method used to measure active curcumin in the blood.
Points to watch in analysis
Some commonly used analytical methods add the enzyme glucuronidase to the blood sample before measurement. This enzyme removes the glucuronide group from inactive curcumin glucuronide in the sample and turns it back into active curcumin.
This creates a distorted result, because inactive curcumin is then also included in the measurement. That does not reflect the real blood levels of biologically active curcumin in the body.
The producer of Curcumine-SLCP™ uses only an analytical method without added glucuronidase. This method measures only biologically active curcumin.
People often speak about absorption when they discuss a nutrient. This refers to the maximum blood level, or Cmax, reached at a certain time after oral intake.
Absorption and bioavailability
Absorption is part of bioavailability, but it does not tell the full story. A nutrient may be absorbed very well and reach a high blood level quickly, but then break down and leave the body too fast to act long enough.
It is also important to look at how the blood level changes over time, not only at the moment of the highest level. What matters is how long the nutrient stays in the blood in its biologically active form and how long it has the chance to act.
This relates to bioavailability. Bioavailability is the part of a nutrient that the body absorbs and can use in specific body processes.
In a graph, bioavailability is shown by the AUC value, or Area Under the Curve. This is the surface area under the green line in figure 1.
Practical relevance
When comparing curcumin products, it is better to look at total bioavailability in humans and not only at absorption. Because of its high bioavailability, Curcumine-SLCP™ can be used in a low effective dose.
Because active curcumin remains in the body for a long time, one daily dose is enough. This improves ease of use.
Not everyone tolerates high doses of curcumin well. It is also easier to remember one intake moment per day than several.
