Choline and cell membrane structure
Choline forms an important component of cell membranes. It occurs in phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin.
These phospholipids support the structure and stability of cell membranes throughout the body.
Role in lipid metabolism and liver function
Choline also participates in lipid metabolism. The choline derivative phosphatidylcholine forms a component of VLDL cholesterol.
This compound participates in the conversion and transport of fats from the liver. For this reason choline supports normal liver function.
Role in homocysteine metabolism
Choline is required for the formation of betaine. Betaine acts as a methyl donor in the remethylation of homocysteine in the liver.
This process supports normal homocysteine metabolism and helps maintain normal homocysteine levels in the blood.
Synergy with other nutrients
Choline interacts with vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, and SAMe.
Phosphatidylcholine produced through the SAMe-dependent metabolic pathway often becomes enriched with DHA. This process forms phosphatidylcholine-DHA.
Choline and DHA therefore work together in a synergistic way.
