Absorption of berberine
Part of berberine remains in the gastrointestinal tract. It does not disturb beneficial bacteria. For this reason, it can be used before or together with a probiotic.
After absorption through the intestinal lining, part returns to the intestinal lumen. Another part breaks down in the intestinal wall or the liver.
Distribution in tissues
This process explains why the plasma level of berberine remains low. Studies show that berberine and its metabolites quickly enter several organs and tissues.
These include the liver, kidneys, muscles, lungs, brain, heart, pancreas, and adipose tissue. In most examined tissues, berberine levels were many times higher than the levels in blood plasma.
Metabolic activity
Berberine supports the activity of AMPK (adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase). This enzyme acts as a metabolic master switch in the body.
AMPK supports glucose and fat metabolism. It helps cells take up glucose and fatty acids and supports their oxidation in the mitochondria, where energy is released.
Blood sugar and fat metabolism
Through this mechanism, berberine supports blood sugar regulation and normal fat metabolism. This contributes to maintaining normal triglyceride levels in the blood.
Berberine also supports healthy cholesterol levels. It influences the breakdown of cholesterol into bile acids, the formation and secretion of bile, and the excretion of free cholesterol in bile.
Cardiovascular and liver support
Healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels support normal heart and blood vessel function. Berberine is also beneficial for the liver.
Research shows that berberine is well absorbed in the liver, where it supports local lipid metabolism.
Oxidation
Oxidation is a process in which a substance transfers electrons to another substance. Oxidation of glucose and fatty acids occurs in the cell mitochondria and releases energy.
