Maitake means dancing mushroom in Japanese. The mushroom is said to have gotten its name after people danced with happiness when they found it in the wild, because of its positive properties.
Although this mushroom can only be used for flavor in recipes, it is considered a medicinal mushroom.
The mushroom grows wild in parts of Japan, China and North America. It grows on the undersides of oaks, elms and maples.
Although maitake mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in Japan and China, it has only recently become more popular in the United States.
