Iron bisglycinate

This product contains iron in the form of iron bisglycinate. In this form, each iron particle is strongly bound, or chelated, to two molecules of the amino acid glycine.

The general term for this type of compound is an amino acid chelate or amino acid-chelated mineral. The word chelate comes from Greek and means claw.

This form was chosen because it is gentle on the stomach, unlike many other iron compounds. It also has very good bioavailability.

The formula also contains vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid to further support iron absorption. The iron bisglycinate in this product is Ferrochel® from Albion Minerals.

Albion Minerals

Vitals uses only true amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals. These can be recognized by the TRAACS® trademark, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System.

This trademark was introduced to clearly distinguish these minerals from other amino acid chelates that may be inferior or unstable.

Albion has secured more than 100 patents worldwide. These patents support the process, science, and structure behind its amino acid-chelated minerals.

The company also carries out research on its minerals and performs quality testing on every batch produced. This is important to confirm that chelation has taken place and that the bonds are strong enough.

Benefits of amino acid-chelated minerals

The chelate structure in an amino acid chelate is strong enough to resist breakdown by stomach acid and digestive enzymes. This usually happens with other mineral compounds.

At the same time, the structure is weak enough to release the mineral after absorption by cells in the intestine.

The amino acids fold around the mineral and protect it during digestion. They remain attached throughout this process.

The chelate also has a neutral electrical charge. As a result, it does not bind to food particles in the stomach or intestines.

Absorption in the intestine

The amino acid chelate reaches the small intestine intact. There it is absorbed as a dipeptide, a compound made of two amino acids.

This is beneficial because the body absorbs amino acids, and especially dipeptides, very easily. This is even more favorable when they contain glycine, the smallest amino acid.

For this reason, amino acid-chelated minerals are absorbed much better than other mineral forms.

In the epithelial tissue of the jejunum, the middle part of the small intestine, the amino acid-chelated mineral enters the mucosal cells by active transport without competing with other minerals.

Release inside the cells

Only inside the mucosal cells do metabolic processes split the glycine from the mineral. The separate components then become available to organs and systems throughout the body.

Functions of iron

Iron is an essential trace element. It contributes to the formation of hemoglobin in red blood cells and therefore plays a role in oxygen transport in the body.

Because of its role in oxygen transport, iron also contributes to normal cognitive function.

Iron is also present in cytochromes. These are enzymes that use iron as a cofactor and are involved in electron transport in the mitochondria.

These processes are essential for the production of cellular energy in the form of ATP. In this way, iron supports energy metabolism and energy levels.

Energy, cells, and immunity

Iron can help reduce tiredness and fatigue. Its role in oxygen transport and energy metabolism also means it is needed for the formation of new cells and tissues.

Iron also has a positive effect on the immune system. This may be linked to its role in the formation and regulation of certain immune cells and immune substances.
