Ginkgo biloba extract
Ginkgo biloba, also called the Japanese maidenhair tree, originally comes from Central China. It is the oldest living tree species on earth, with a history of about 300 million years.
The leaf extract of Ginkgo biloba supports health in several ways. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginkgo leaf has been used for more than 5000 years.
In Western countries, it is used mainly to support blood circulation and cognitive functions, such as memory, concentration, and learning ability.
Standardized composition
Only strongly concentrated, standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts show an effective action.
Ginkgo biloba-PS from Vitals contains 480 mg of the branded ingredient Virtiva® per capsule. This consists of 120 mg of Ginkgo biloba extract and 360 mg of lecithin.
The extract provides 24 mg of flavone glycosides and 6 mg of terpene lactones. The lecithin provides 55 mg of phosphatidylserine.
This 24/6 ratio of flavone glycosides and terpene lactones is the one most often used in scientific research on Ginkgo biloba.
Phytosome® technology
The absorption and bioavailability of the flavone glycosides and terpene lactones in Ginkgo biloba-PS are strongly improved through the patented Phytosome® technology from the Italian producer Indena.
The term Phytosome comes from the Greek words phuton, meaning plant, and soma, meaning body.
During the patented production process, the natural clumping of specific phytonutrients with low absorption is reduced. These compounds are then mixed with phospholipids from sunflower lecithin, in this case phosphatidylserine.
The active compounds are not enclosed, as happens in liposomes. Instead, a homogeneous mixture of small particles is formed that can be absorbed well.
How absorption works
The active compounds in Ginkgo biloba include lipophilic terpene lactones and hydrophilic flavone glycosides. Phospholipids have both a lipophilic side and a hydrophilic side.
Because of this, the phytonutrients tend to bind to the phospholipids and form so-called phytosomes.
This supports absorption. Cell membranes, including those of cells in the small intestine and brain, also consist of a phospholipid bilayer.
Studies have shown that this Phytosome® technology improves the absorption and bioavailability of phytonutrients.
Compared with liposomes
In a liposome, the active substance is located in the center of a sphere with a double phospholipid layer.
Phytosome® technology works differently. It creates a homogeneous mixture and does not enclose the active substance.
As a result, much less phospholipid is needed than with liposomes.
