Calcium from red algae

Red algae (Latin name Lithothamnium sp.) grows in mineral-rich seawater. The algae absorbs calcium and other minerals and trace elements from the water and stores them in its cell walls.

The dried powder from red algae naturally contains up to 30% calcium and about 4% magnesium. It also provides small amounts of other essential minerals.

Natural calcium structure

In red algae, calcium occurs as calcium carbonate. This form differs from calcium carbonate from rock.

Red algae has a porous mineral structure. This structure creates a large surface area and dissolves well in the stomach. As a result, the body absorbs this calcium efficiently.

Several human studies have examined calcium from red algae. These studies confirm good absorption and effectiveness.

Organic harvesting of red algae

The red algae used for Calcium Organic from Vitals grows in waters in South America. Harvest follows the rules of organic aquaculture.

Harvesting takes place by hand in designated areas with good water quality. This method protects the natural environment.

Some conventional producers collect dead red algae by dredging the ocean floor. This method requires less labor but harms the seabed and marine life. Organic standards therefore do not allow dredging.

Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 as calcium partners

For optimal use of calcium, combine a calcium supplement with vitamin D3 and vitamin K2.

Vitamin D3 supports calcium absorption. Vitamin K2 helps direct calcium to the right places in the body. Calcium then supports bones instead of accumulating in blood vessel walls.

Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 are present in Vitals multivitamins. They are also available as separate products and combined formulas so you can select the desired dose. These products are not yet available with organic certification.
