Cocoa flavanols in a concentrated form
Cacaoflavanolen-HF from Vitals provides a high dose of flavanols from cocoa. A daily intake of 200 mg cocoa flavanols supports the maintenance of blood vessel elasticity. This effect contributes to normal blood circulation.
This product uses the standardized cocoa bean extract CocoActiv™, which researchers have used in several scientific studies.
Cocoa without sugar and excess calories
Many people enjoy chocolate for its taste. Dark chocolate is sometimes linked to health benefits, yet its nutritional composition varies widely between products.
Many chocolate products contain relatively little cocoa and consist largely of sugar and fat. As a result, the phytonutrients from cocoa form only a small part of the product and are overshadowed by less healthy ingredients.
Cacaoflavanolen-HF provides a way to obtain the valuable compounds from cocoa without the disadvantages of sugar, saturated fat, and unnecessary calories.
Cocoa: food of the gods
The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) originates from Central and South America. The Maya and Aztecs already valued cocoa highly. The name Theobroma literally means ‘food of the gods’.
Today cocoa is mainly known as an ingredient in chocolate. The cocoa bean itself, however, is a natural source of several bioactive plant compounds.
Flavanols from cocoa
Flavanols belong to the group of polyphenols. These plant compounds occur naturally in cocoa and give cocoa its characteristic bitter taste.
The flavanol content of cocoa varies widely due to origin and processing. Fermentation, roasting, and further processing reduce a large part of these sensitive plant compounds.
As a result, cocoa and chocolate products often supply variable and relatively low amounts of flavanols. To obtain the same amount of these bioactive polyphenols as in one capsule of Cacaoflavanolen-HF, a very large amount of dark chocolate would be required.
Support for blood vessel function
The health claim approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for cocoa flavanols relates to their role in maintaining normal vascular function.
Cocoa flavanols support processes in the vessel wall that regulate the balance between dilation and constriction of blood vessels.
The endothelium, the inner lining of the blood vessels, plays a central role in this process. It is involved in the production and activity of nitric oxide (NO), a natural signaling molecule that helps blood vessels relax.
Cocoa flavanols support these nitric oxide related processes in the endothelium. Proper nitric oxide activity supports flexible blood vessels and normal circulation. Flavanols also help limit oxidative stress in the vessel wall, which supports normal endothelial function.
Based on these mechanisms, EFSA concluded that a daily intake of at least 200 mg cocoa flavanols contributes to the maintenance of blood vessel elasticity, which supports normal blood circulation.
CocoActiv™ standardized cocoa bean extract
CocoActiv™ is a carefully produced cocoa bean extract. Manufacturers use cocoa beans that are not fermented or roasted. These common processing methods normally reduce the natural level of bioactive polyphenols in cocoa.
During production, most of the fat fraction is removed and the flavanols are concentrated through a patented extraction process. This process produces an extract rich in cocoa flavanols while preserving their natural profile.
The cocoa bean extract is standardized. Each serving therefore provides a consistent amount of flavanols.
CocoActiv™ has been used in several scientific studies. The composition of Cacaoflavanolen-HF therefore aligns with the dosages and quality criteria used by EFSA when evaluating the health claim for cocoa flavanols.
Approved health claim
Cocoa flavanols support the maintenance of the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood circulation.
The beneficial effect occurs with a daily intake of at least 200 mg flavanols from cocoa.
