Next-generation boswellia extract

Boswellia-AF from Vitals contains AprèsFlex®, a new boswellia extract with improved bioavailability. This next-generation extract is better absorbed, which increases its effectiveness.

Studies show that the first results may become noticeable after five days. The improved absorption allows the active compounds to reach effective levels more quickly.

Boswellia resin

Boswellia refers to the dried gum resin of the tropical frankincense tree Boswellia serrata. The resin flows from the trunk when the bark becomes damaged naturally or through controlled cuts.

The substance is called a gum resin because it contains both water-soluble components (gum) and alcohol-soluble components (resin).

Traditional use and active compounds

Boswellia has been used for thousands of years as a natural remedy, particularly for joints, the respiratory system, and the gastrointestinal tract.

Boswellia extracts have also been used for decades as dietary supplements. The main active compounds are boswellic acids. Among these compounds, acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) shows the strongest activity.

Importance of bioavailability

Boswellia extracts are often standardized for AKBA. Natural boswellia resin contains only about 2–3% AKBA.

The effectiveness of a boswellia extract depends on both the level of active compounds and their absorption after oral intake. AKBA absorbs poorly, so improved bioavailability increases effectiveness.

Mechanism of action

Boswellia helps maintain normal activity of the enzymes 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein (FLAP). The compound AKBA plays a central role in this process.

5-LOX supports the synthesis of certain leukotrienes from arachidonic acid. These molecules act as local tissue mediators.

By helping maintain normal levels of 5-LOX and FLAP, boswellia supports healthy cartilage and helps maintain normal joint function.

AprèsFlex extract

Boswellia-AF from Vitals contains AprèsFlex, the new name of a boswellia extract developed by Laila Nutra. Earlier publications refer to this same extract as Aflapin®.

Laila Nutra focuses on highly absorbable and fast-acting boswellia extracts. The company previously developed the extract 5-Loxin®.

Improved formulation

The manufacturer aimed to improve the absorption of boswellia compounds further. Testing different compositions led to the development of AprèsFlex, an improved version of 5-Loxin.

AprèsFlex contains a boswellia extract standardized to 20% AKBA combined with part of the non-volatile oils from the boswellia resin.

These naturally occurring oils improve the absorption and bioavailability of AKBA. Although AprèsFlex contains less AKBA than 5-Loxin (20% versus 30%), studies show that it is up to 50% better absorbed and more effective.
