Semi-essential amino acid

L-carnitine belongs to the group of semi-essential amino acids. The body can produce part of its supply. Food provides the rest that is needed for daily intake.

L-carnitine occurs mainly in red meat. Plant foods contain much smaller amounts.

Formation of acetyl-L-carnitine

Acetyl-L-carnitine, often called ALCAR, is the acetylated form of carnitine. The body can produce carnitine in the liver, kidneys, and brain.

This process uses the amino acids lysine and methionine. vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6, and niacin act as cofactors.

The body can convert carnitine into acetyl-L-carnitine when needed. The reverse conversion can also occur.

Ability to reach the brain

Acetyl-L-carnitine has an advantage over L-carnitine in supplements. It passes the blood-brain barrier more easily.
