Source and composition
This product contains L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), extracted from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP is the converted and biologically active form of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan.
It acts as the direct precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin.
Why choose 5-HTP
Food supplements with 5-HTP have been used for more than thirty years. The body absorbs this form efficiently, even when taken with a meal. It crosses the blood-brain barrier with ease.
5-HTP does not compete with other amino acids for absorption. Unlike L-tryptophan, it does not require a shared transport molecule.
Another advantage is that 5-HTP does not need further conversion in the body. In contrast, more than 95% of ingested L-tryptophan converts into proteins and other molecules. Only a small portion remains available as a precursor of serotonin and melatonin.
For these reasons, 5-HTP is preferred over L-tryptophan. Lower dosages are sufficient to achieve the desired intake.
