Vitamin A supports eye health

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin mainly found in animal products such as meat, fish, and dairy. Another name for vitamin A is retinol, derived from the retina of the eye. Vitamin A supports eye health and contributes to normal vision.

Helps maintain sharp vision in low light

The retina contains rods and cones that convert light into images. Cones support color vision during daylight, while rods support vision in dim light. Rod cells contain the pigment rhodopsin. Vitamin A supports the formation of this pigment and helps maintain sharp vision in the dark. Vitamin A also helps maintain normal moisture balance in the eyes.

Vitamin A supports healthy skin

The skin depends on many nutrients, including vitamin A. Vitamin A supports the skin from within and plays a role in cell specialization. Skin renews itself about once each month. Vitamin A helps maintain healthy skin and also supports normal structure and function of mucous membranes.

Beta-carotene converts into vitamin A

Beta-carotene is a precursor of vitamin A and occurs in leafy greens, cabbage vegetables, and orange or yellow fruits and vegetables. After consumption, several conversion steps occur before the body can use the active form, retinol. Only about 9 to 22 percent of consumed beta-carotene becomes active vitamin A after conversion.

Retinyl acetate compared with beta-carotene

High beta-carotene intake is not recommended for smokers. Research shows that daily supplementation of 20 mg or more can increase lung cancer risk. Recommendations limit intake to 10 mg per day. This concern does not apply to retinyl acetate, which makes this form a safer option for vitamin A supplementation in smokers.

Retinyl acetate as an efficiently absorbed form

Vitamin A exists in several forms. Retinyl acetate is a stable and active form that also occurs in large amounts in the outer skin layer. Supplements also often use retinyl palmitate. Retinyl acetate provides higher activity per milligram compared with other forms.

Vitamin A activity explained

Retinol is a common vitamin A form but not the final active form used in the body. The body converts retinol into retinoic acid for biological activity. Vitamin A activity often appears in International Units. One microgram of retinol equals about 3.33 International Units.

Plant-based diets may require extra vitamin A attention

Vegetarians and vegans should monitor vitamin A intake carefully. Many people reduce or avoid animal products, which makes adequate vitamin A intake harder to achieve. Supplementation can help when diets contain limited animal-based foods.
