Quercetin from food
Quercetin is a plant-based bioflavonoid naturally found in foods such as onions, apples, berries, grapes, citrus fruits, and buckwheat. It belongs to the group of phytonutrients, biologically active substances produced by plants, often as protection against external influences such as UV radiation, fungi, or insect damage. Phytonutrients are not vitamins or minerals but form a separate group of plant compounds. Well-known examples include flavonoids (such as quercetin), carotenoids (such as beta-carotene), and polyphenols (such as resveratrol).
Physicochemical properties of quercetin
A notable characteristic of quercetin is that it is only slightly soluble in water. Since most nutrients in our digestive system are processed in aqueous environments, this means quercetin is naturally less soluble in the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, only part of the consumed amount may ultimately become available for further processing in the body.
Combination with phospholipids for optimal absorption
The Italian nutrient specialist Indena has developed a special form of quercetin. Bioflavonoids from the flowers of the Japanese pagoda tree are combined with phospholipids, fat-like substances that are also found in the cell membranes of the human body. Phospholipids have both a water-soluble (hydrophilic) and a fat-soluble (lipophilic) side, allowing them to function as a bridge between water and fats.
When quercetin is bound to phospholipids, a compound is formed that mixes better with both aqueous and fatty environments. In practical terms, this means quercetin in this form dissolves better in the digestive environment, contributing to more stable and even distribution within the body.
Quercetin up to 20 times better absorbed thanks to Phytosome® technology
The natural binding of quercetin to phospholipids creates a homogeneous mixture known as phytosomes. The product of this Phytosome® technology carries the patented name Quercefit®. Research shows that Quercefit® is absorbed ten to twenty times better than regular quercetin.
Quercetin supports improved zinc absorption
Zinc is an essential mineral often combined with quercetin. In scientific contexts, quercetin is frequently studied for its unique properties, including its behavior as a so-called zinc ionophore. Adequate ionophores help transport zinc into cells. For this reason, zinc supplementation is often recommended in combination with sufficient quercetin intake.
250 mg per capsule; more than sufficient thanks to Phytosome® technology
Many quercetin supplements contain up to 500 mg of standard quercetin. A dose of 250 mg per capsule may therefore appear low. However, as explained, Quercefit® is absorbed ten to twenty times better than regular quercetin. In terms of effectiveness and price-quality ratio, our Quercetin 250 is therefore an excellent choice.
