Vitamin K in the recommended dosage
The Health Council advises giving breastfed infants an extra 150 mcg of vitamin K from day 8 up to and including 12 weeks. Immediately after birth, all infants receive 1,000 mcg of vitamin K from the midwife. This dosage covers the first week. From day 8 until the end of the first 12 weeks, the advice is to give an additional 150 mcg per day. During this early stage of life, babies cannot yet produce vitamin K themselves.

When and how much?
The dose of vitamin K given by the midwife after birth is sufficient for the first week. From day 8 until the end of month 3, an additional daily intake of 150 mcg of vitamin K is recommended.
Vitamin K supports normal blood clotting
Vitamin K is found in foods of animal origin such as quark and cheese, and also in natto, which is fermented soybeans. Newborns have an increased need for this vitamin at birth. Vitamin K is essential because it contributes to normal blood clotting.
