High-dose active folate (400 mcg) as recommended by midwives

During pregnancy, people often ask: "Are you already taking folic acid?" Some pregnancy complications relate to low folic acid levels. A low folate status in the mother is a risk factor for spina bifida in the developing fetus.

That is why midwives advise daily folic acid during pregnancy. Your body needs about four weeks to build up folate levels. This is why the advice starts before pregnancy, when you want to conceive. Midwives recommend a minimum of 400 mcg folic acid per day.

Our Active Folic Acid contains 400 mcg Quatrefolic®. This is a highly absorbable form of folate. This dose is suitable if you want to become pregnant or if you are already pregnant.

Folate is the biologically active form of folic acid

Folic acid is the synthetic form of vitamin B11. Folate is the active and bioavailable form. Your body absorbs folate more easily.

Your body must convert folic acid before it can use it. It converts folic acid into dihydrofolate (DHF). It then converts DHF into tetrahydrofolate (THF). After that, it becomes folate (5-MTHF).

If you take folate in a supplement, your body can use it right away. This can make it more effective.

Quatrefolic®, the fourth generation of folate

Quatrefolic® is known as a fourth-generation folate. It has high bioavailability compared to other folate forms.

It is stable because it binds to a glucosamine salt instead of a calcium salt. This can help it stay stable in the stomach and intestines. This can support better absorption of folate (5-MTHF).

Quatrefolic® provides 5-MTHF in a ready-to-use form. This means the body does not need extra helper nutrients to use folate.

Absorption of Quatrefolic®

Easy to take due to a small tablet

Active Folic Acid tablets are very small. The diameter is about nine millimeters. The average weight is 160 milligrams. The thickness is about three millimeters. This makes them easy to swallow, even if you take more than one tablet at a time.
