Vitamin K: K1 + 2 forms of K2

Thorne’s Vitamin K provides comprehensive support by utilising three clinically studied forms of vitamin K: K1, and K2 (as MK-4 and MK-7).

Vitamin K2, in the form of MK-4, helps to support bone strength and density, as well as the health of the blood vessels. Vitamin K2 in the extensively researched MenaQ7® MK-7 form provides additional K2 support.

The formula is designed to help maintain bone mineral density and support healthy blood vessels.

Vitamin K1

Vitamin K1 is best known for supporting normal, healthy blood clotting. Vitamin K1 is most commonly found in green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, Swiss chard and parsley.

Difference between MK-4 and MK-7

MK-4 and MK-7 are both natural forms of vitamin K2. They occur naturally in various foods: MK-4 is found mainly in animal products, whilst MK-7 is found primarily in fermented foods, such as natto. Although they come from different sources, they are both forms of vitamin K2 with largely overlapping functions in the body.

The main difference between MK-4 and MK-7 is how long they remain active in the body. MK-4 has a short half-life and is broken down relatively quickly, which means that blood levels also fall more rapidly. To maintain sufficient levels in the bloodstream, higher or repeated doses are therefore often required. MK-7, on the other hand, has a much longer half-life and remains in the bloodstream for longer. As a result, it can be effective even at much lower doses.

The fact that MK-4 is usually taken in higher doses does not therefore mean that it is more potent than MK-7. It mainly reflects the difference in duration of action and bioavailability: MK-4 is short-acting, whilst MK-7 remains active for a longer period.

For this reason, supplements are also dosed in different units. MK-4 is usually expressed in milligrams (mg), whilst MK-7 is generally given in micrograms (mcg). As a result, the dosages appear to differ significantly, but this is mainly due to the different properties of the two forms and not because one form is, by definition, stronger or better than the other.

Vitamin K and magnesium both help maintain normal bones. Although they fulfil different functions in the body, together they support normal bone health.

Vegetarian capsule

Most vitamin K supplements come in a softgel or gelatine capsule. Thorne Vitamin K capsules are vegetarian, making the product suitable for vegetarians.
