What is Saccharomyces boulardii?

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast, not a bacterium. This yeast belongs to the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae and is therefore also referred to as Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. (a variety within a species) boulardii. Although the two are closely related, they are used for different purposes. S. boulardii is used as a probiotic yeast, whilst S. cerevisiae is best known as baker’s and brewer’s yeast and is used in various foods and dietary supplements.

Why choose a probiotic yeast?

Saccharomyces boulardii differs from many other probiotics in that it is a yeast rather than a bacteria. As a result, it has different properties to bacterial probiotics. Many people therefore make a conscious choice to take a supplement containing Saccharomyces boulardii to complement their daily diet.

Is Saccharomyces boulardii naturally present in food?

Saccharomyces boulardii is rarely found naturally in the daily diet. The yeast was originally isolated from the skin of lychees and mangosteens, but these fruits are not a practical source for regular consumption. Unlike many bacterial probiotics, which are found in fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir and sauerkraut, Saccharomyces boulardii is therefore mainly taken in the form of dietary supplements.
