Natural (Pharma)GABA

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a naturally occurring substance that is synthesized primarily in the central nervous system, but also in the pancreas and the gut.

A Unique Product

What makes Thorne’s GABA so unique is that, unlike many other GABA products, PharmaGABA is 100% natural. PharmaGABA is produced through a fermentation process that uses Lactobacillus hilgardii. This is a bacterium used to ferment certain vegetables, known as “kimchi.”

Brain Metabolism

GABA is a neurotransmitter and is essential for brain metabolism; it facilitates signal transmission in the brain.

GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, while glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter that acts like an accelerator. When glutamate levels are high, your brain has a harder time relaxing. Maintaining a good balance between the two is essential.

Beta waves and Alpha waves

Our brains can oscillate at different frequencies. When you feel stressed, your brainwaves oscillate at a different frequency than when you feel relaxed. When you feel relaxed and calm, you produce alpha waves; when you feel tense, you produce beta waves. GABA can increase the production of alpha waves and help reduce the production of beta waves.

Cofactors

GABA is primarily synthesized from the amino acid glutamic acid with the help of the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase, which requires vitamin B6 as a cofactor. This process occurs largely in neurons, but also in various peripheral tissues.

A gut microbiome containing a wide variety of different probiotic strains is important for the production of GABA in our intestines.

Impact on the body’s own production

In addition to alcohol, other factors can also have a negative impact on GABA. This may be due to a decrease in the body’s own production or an imbalance. Sufficient pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P, active vitamin B6) is important here, as are adequate amounts of protein or glutamine. Chronic stress and sleep deprivation can also negatively affect GABA production and function.

Pure, high quality

The product has been thirs party tested and certified by an independent body, ensuring its quality and purity.

Product variants

In addition to PharmaGABA-100, there is also a 250 mg variant: PharmaGABA-250.
