Thorne Multi Enzyme is a digestive enzyme formula consisting of betaine hydrochloride (HCl) and pepsin combined with pancreatic enzymes.
Betaine HCl and Pepsin
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) and the enzyme pepsin are secreted in the stomach. HCl is pure stomach acid, a very strong acid that is not suitable for direct consumption. By binding HCl to betaine, it is released in a milder form in the stomach.
An optimal acidity level in the stomach is important, as it helps the body better absorb nutrients such as folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C, beta-carotene, iron, and minerals.
The enzyme pepsin aids in the digestion of proteins in the stomach.
Pancreatic Enzymes
Amylase, lipase, and protease are pancreatic enzymes secreted by the pancreas into the small intestine. These enzymes are essential for the digestion and absorption of nutrients from the food we eat.
Amylase is the enzyme essential for breaking down carbohydrates such as starch and sugars.
Lipase is the enzyme essential for breaking down fats, which is important for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, CoQ10, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Protease is the enzyme essential for breaking down proteins into peptide bonds and amino acids.
