Broccoli Seed Extract

(Formerly: Crucera-SGS)

Thorne’s Broccoli Seed Extract is the highest-potency sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS) formula derived from broccoli and kale seed extracts, supplemented with myrosinase from mustard seeds for optimal bioavailability.

Each capsule of Thorne’s broccoli seed extract is equivalent to eating nearly a pound of cruciferous vegetables.

Sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS)

SGS is a compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli sprouts. This is different from the standard broccoli extract offered by many manufacturers. Broccoli sprouts contain 10 to 100 times more glucoraphanin than mature broccoli.

SGS is the inactive precursor of sulforaphane. SGS is also known as glucoraphanin and is activated by the enzyme myrosinase. Without activation by myrosinase, glucoraphanin is excreted undigested and does not provide the benefits of sulforaphane.

The essential enzyme myrosinase

Thorne has added mustard seed extract to the formula, containing 14.5 myrosinase enzyme units, to enhance the bioavailability of SGS. Vitamin C has been added to activate the myrosinase. This ensures the product’s optimal efficacy.

Sulforaphane from food

To maximize the sulforaphane content from food, it’s best to first chop broccoli sprouts finely and then let them rest for 10–15 minutes. This gives the enzyme myrosinase time to activate. Then eat the sprouts raw or steam them briefly (less than 5 minutes). Avoid high temperatures, as heat above 140 °C deactivates myrosinase and reduces sulforaphane formation.
