SOD (superoxide dismutase)
SOD (superoxide dismutase) is an enzyme with antioxidant activity. It protects the body cells from free radicals as superoxide. The SOD enzyme breaks down superoxide before it can cause damage (to DNA, for example). This clearing process also involves glutathione.
Superoxide and other (free) radicals) are a "by-product" of, among other things, the conversion of glucose to energy.
The production of SOD in the body depends on so-called co-factors, one of which is manganese.
