What is limonene?
D-limonene is a natural monoterpene. Producers mainly extract it from the peels of oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and other citrus fruits.
It is an important component of citrus essential oils. Limonene also appears in foods, drinks, perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products because of its clear citrus scent and taste.
Limonene is one of the most common terpenes found in nature.
Function of terpenes
Terpenes are organic compounds that plants produce for protection against pests. At the same time, terpenes attract pollinators.
Scientists classify terpenes by the number of isoprene units, such as monoterpenes (C10), sesquiterpenes (C15), and diterpenes (C20), including their derivatives.
Isoprene units are the building blocks of terpenes. Each unit contains five carbon atoms and forms the basis of many natural compounds.
Properties
Although terpenes are mainly plant-based, some insects can also produce them. There are hundreds of different terpenes, and a single plant can contain a wide range of them.
Many terpenes have distinct properties and specific effects in the body.
The R-form of limonene is called D-limonene. The S-form is called L-limonene. This variant occurs less often in nature and has a scent closer to pine or resin. Both forms are structurally similar monoterpenes.
